「熊を殺すと雨が降る」とはマタギに語り継がれる言い伝えである。山の神が聖なる地を熊の血で穢したことを怒り、雨を降らせて山を清くするという意味だ。だがマタギは裏の意味も知っている。熊は雨が降る前に食いだめをするため、この時に撃たれることが多いのだ。けれどもマタギは言い伝えどおりに記憶する。神の祟りを畏れたのだ—。山に暮らした人びとは、生態系の仕組みを科学の目では捉えなかった。そこに人間が自然と折り合いをつけて生きるための知恵を読み解き、暮らしの原点を克明に描いた快著。
